WHERE WE STARTED

A co-worker of mine (Brooke) just went through adoption with Bethany Christian services. After researching different agencies, both state and private, we decided to go with Bethany. A social worker came to our house and answered our questions, as well as explained the process we would go through and the financial commitment it would take. Ben and I were eager to get started. We filled out our Preliminary Application and Statement of Faith. We began logging our training hours (we need to complete 10 hours each). We filled out our Formal Application and paid initial fees. Now it starts to get real…

WHERE WE ARE NOW

Once we are finished with the paperwork process, we will be interviewed individually and then together by our social worker. We will make sure the house is all ready for our future baby!! There are some more details that will happen here, but I’m not sure what they are yet. We have to get down in writing what we are comfortable and open to as far as special needs, ethnicity, mom’s health (including drug and alcohol use), and if we are open to twins (which I, Brooke, want desperately!!).o now we are completing the Home Study portion of the adoption. This includes, but is not limited to: FBI Background Checks, turning in birth certificates and marriage licenses, answering very detailed and lengthy questionnaires, getting physicians reports, insurance information, getting professional photos taken, family history, references from pastors and friends, release and consent forms, and so much more!

Ben and I will create a scrapbook of sorts that will be shown to the families looking for a home for their birth children. It will be made by us and about us and will include letters to both the birth mother and birth father from each of us.

The reality is that average placement time once our book starts getting shown is 3 years. It seems like a long time, but we really do trust that God already has our child hand-picked for us, and we are willing to wait for the Lord’s perfect timing.
